No Public Gathering For LMBC but...
Updated: Apr 22
Well, here I sit in my study at the little brick building where the church I pastor normally meets. My heart is saddened by the fact that this is the first Sunday morning we will not be having service because of the social distancing recommendations and ordinances of our government.
Frankly, a part of me wants to disobey out of principle. I am Scripturally obligated to obey government except for when it contradicts the commands of God.
Romans 13:1 Let every soul be subject unto the higher powers. For there is no power but of God: the powers that be are ordained of God.
Acts 5:29 Then Peter and the other apostles answered and said, We ought to obey God rather than men.
A part of me wants to be like Shadrach, Meshach and Abednego and not bow to the state. A part of me is tempted to be a Daniel and faithfully obey God’s dictates for worship rather than man. I considered following the example of many brave souls around the world who rightfully disobey their government and are forced to covertly attend secret church services in order to be obedient to the true supreme authority. Church meetings are an absolutely essential gathering in spite of what some have said.
I considered these things but then my heart for my people kicked in. I know that following these recommendations are what is best for the entire flock. As we have stated recently, some of the most faithful folks in our congregation are also the most vulnerable to the virus. If we have service they will come and put themselves at risk. Common sense helps me to understand that something needs to be done to slow the spread of this disease and we all need to do our part. I also know that if we don’t meet the church won’t run out of toilet paper.
I know that the sovereign Lord has a plan to make this virus accomplish something great and it will bring him glory. Coronavirus is not exempt from Romans 8:28
Romans 8:28 And we know that all things work together for good to them that love God, to them who are the called according to his purpose.
Having said all that, we will attempt a live stream today at 11:00 am when our church is normally scheduled to gather. We hope to bring some word of encouragement and hopefully make sense of all of this.
Until we gather and I get to see ya'll face to face, I pray for God's blessings on you all.
Love in Christ,
